my organic garden built with and for my kids

and we’re off

Ok day 1 of the 52DC is here. And I also started HIAH today. I trimmed back the goals to fit into my plan to continue losing fat while getting stronger and adding muscle.
HIAH on paper looks OK. In reality, I felt like puking!!! Good luck challengers!

Garden is booming. I gotta get iin there and harvest. I made a sugar free cucumber salad last night. I’ll post the recipe. Can’t wait to have that with the london broil that is marinating right now… Yum

Well that’s a tough one to answer. Things have been hard for me. Most of it my own making but still. But what I want most now is to get my head out of the clouds, get my butt in gear and get my act together……… (feel free to add your own cliche here…)
So the next 52DC starts Aug 10 and I will be there with realistic goals.

But I want to also post a garden update. man this thing is getting crazy! have a look…

SO the PLP challenge hurts. PLP stands for Pushup/Lunge/Pullup. started at 4 each per day and increase each day by 1. No days offs. Well I needed a day off. My shoulder just couldnt take it anymore. So I did none saturday and sunday. Good call. Monday’s workout was great and the PLP later in the day was fine. Sometimes you gotta listen to that body, even if it costs you lunch!

I started a custom workout plan designed by a gym buddy. 3 days a week of focused weights with HIIT cardio mixed in. So far the workouts have been great. I feel strong! Add to this straight cardio 3 days a week and I hope to be ripped by the end of the challenge. But, Alas, no more weight is coming off. I tried TNT plan A again but really got tough and I found myself wanting to cheat more than I wanted to get skinny. So I went back to the book. Hadn’t read it in a while and I discovered I need to be on Plan C – protien only. With about 5 lbs to lose, there is no reason to stay on A. And one more thing I discovered; the book states that on your carb day you will actually see your muscles swell as the glycogen is driven back into the muscle tissue. I had not previously truly experienced that but on Saturday, after a breakfast of whole grain cereal, low fat milk with berries and banannas, I LOOKED AND FELT HUGE! It was awesome! So knowing that I can have my carb day and look great doing it makes it easier to eat clean all week. That and cutting out the beer…LOL

I had a very nice moment at the gym this morning. The first trainer I ever used at that gym. Back 18 months ago when I was pear shaped came up to me unsolicited to tell me I looked great and to keep it up! This guy is in fantastic shape and I was really floored by the compliment. Moments like that are really inspiring.

One last thing, and this is for your Blog TNTMan. This recipe is fantastic as a summer salad. Perfect for TNT and is always a big hit when I serve it. It is so differnt and so yummy. Enjoy

Avocado, Shrimp, and Endive Salad Gourmet | June 2002

Yield: Makes 2 to 4 light main-course servings
Active Time: 20 minutes
Total Time: 20 minutes

3 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
2 1/2 teaspoons salt
3/4 lb large shrimp in shells (18 to 20), peeled and deveined
1 tablespoon chopped fresh tarragon
2 teaspoons Dijon mustard
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
3 tablespoons olive oil
2 firm-ripe California avocados (preferably Hass)
1 lb Belgian endive (4 heads), cut crosswise into 1-inch pieces

Bring 2 quarts water, 1 tablespoon lemon juice, and 2 teaspoons salt to a boil in a 3-quart saucepan, then poach shrimp at a bare simmer, uncovered, until just cooked through, about 3 minutes. Transfer with a slotted spoon to a bowl of ice and cold water to stop cooking. Let shrimp chill in water 2 minutes, then drain and pat dry.

Whisk together tarragon, mustard, pepper, and remaining 2 tablespoons lemon juice and 1/2 teaspoon salt in a serving bowl. Add oil in a slow stream, whisking until emulsified.

Quarter avocados lengthwise, then pit, peel, and cut into bite-size pieces. Add shrimp, avocados, and endive to dressing and toss.

Triathalon Race Report

“re-posted from 52DC forum”

I gotta say I feel great. Guys and girls, EVERYONE should enter some sort of organized race during this challenge. A 1 miler to a marathon. Doest matter. It is an amazing feeling from start to finish. Ad finish I did, 1:27:52 is the official time.
swim went well. much better than expected. no major isues except a leaky right goggle. Who needs two eyes to swim ayway, right? Bike ride was good, not great. Why not great? Because riding on a spin bike vs the open road is no comparison. Next time more outdoor rides. Had a big scare cresting a hill< I was pumping hard head down, next thing I know I'm in the weeds and thinking I am gonna crash for sure. Back wheel slid out and I'm fishtailing. Somehow the front wheel kept on gripping, I braked easy, the back weel found some grip (I have no idea how) And I was able to get it back on the road. Heart really pumping!!! But I had the wind. Breathing was never the problem. Quads are another story. Also, my bike shoes bothered me on my road bike and they never do when I spin. In fact my right foot went totally numb with about 1 mile to go in the ride. Didnt come back until almost the 1 mile mark in the run. This is what held me back from really killing it. took me the whole first mile to find my legs. Then 2 good songs in my head (Southern Cross and Big railroad blues) gave a lift to my step and I finished strong with a kick.
Pleasant surprise: as I was finishig the bike I heard my Dad cheering for me. He told me he couldnt make the race. He is a big inspiration for me. At 40 he quit smoking, took up running ad lost 40 lbs. Sound familiar? He's even ran the NYCmarathon. I am not sure about that one.

Great start to this challenge for me.

Day one of 52DC

So in addition to my garden this summer, I decided to enter yet another 52DC. In short the 52DC stands for 52 day challenge. It is a fitness Challenge where you set a certain number of goals for your health and fitness to be tracked over the next 52 days. Why 52 days? because the person that created this thing said so! It has helped me tremendously with my weight loss (26 lbs in 12 months) and staying on target for my fitness (3 triathlons and 1 1/2 marathon since last summer). It’s fun and challenging.

Funny thing is I wasn’t going to join this challenge. I was feeling burned out. Had enough. Gonna eat and drink and be fat and merry! Then a friend/nemesis on the board fried me like a green tomato (yum! cant wait. I bet my friend TNTMAN has a recipe…..)  and I made the decision not only to join but to push myself farther than ever.  So the next 32 days will include running at least 75 miles, biking at least 225 miles, 1000 pullups, 1000 pushups, lifting weights and eating healthy.

I follow the TNT eating program. For info on that let me link you to the

You know, the push from Matt is really what the 52DC is all about, but don’t tell him I said so…….
